Claude Piening, Head of Sotheby’s Orientalist Paintings Department, said: “Sotheby’s stand-alone Orientalist Sale will present some thirty works of the highest quality. We are committed to this important sector in the nineteenth-century market which has enjoyed robust growth over the last ten years, not least because of new interest from North Africa and the Middle East. We have therefore decided to create a ‘Masterpiece’ Orientalist Sale to coincide with a three-day series of related sales at Sotheby’s with the theme of Turkish and Islamic Week: Classical to Contemporary.  We are particularly fortunate to be offering two highly important and extremely rare works by Aivazovsky and Hamdy Bey, which represent a unique opportunity for private and institutional collectors alike. Great works by Hamdy Bey are exceptionally rare, with the added fascination that they provide a Turk’s – rather than an outsider’s – interpretation of life in the region.”

Among the highlights in the sale are:
  • View of Constantinople and the Bosphorus by Ivan Aivazovsky, estimated at £1,200,000-1,800,000
  • The Scholar by Osman Hamdy Bey, executed in 1878, estimated at £3,000,000-5,000,000
  • Le Hajj by Alfred Dehodencq, estimated at £100,000-150,000
  • John Frederick Lewis’ watercolour, Halt in the Desert, estimated at £80,000-120,000
  • Two paintings depicting Egypt by Edward LearPhilae (estimated at £30,000-40,000) and Sheik Abadeh on The Nile (estimated at £30,000-40,000)
  • One of the most iconic images in nineteenth-century Orientalist art, Le Simoun, by Eugène Fromentin, estimated at £200,000-300,000
  • Rebecca by Boris Anisfeld, one of a series of Biblical subjects, estimated at £200,000-300,000
  • Mauresque noire by Charles Cordier, an important rediscovered bust, estimated at £50,000-80,000

SALE: Russian Works of Art, Fabergé & Icons at Sotheby’s in April

Sotheby’s New York auction of Russian Works of Art, Fabergé & Icons on 17 April 2012 will offer a strong selection of rare and magnificent objects, many of which are emerging from private collections where they have been hidden for decades. The morning session at 10am will include icons, bronzes, porcelain and jewelry, featuring 124 dinner, soup and dessert plates commissioned in 1856 by Emperor Alexander II as additions to the St. Andrew Service, and crafted at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St. Petersburg (11 lots, with estimates ranging from $9,000 to 80,000). The afternoon session at 2pm will offer important silver, enamels, Fabergé pieces, led by A Rare Fabergé Carved Lapis Lazuli Desk Clock Mounted in Gold, Silver, and Enamel, Workmaster Henrik Wigstrom, St. Petersburg, circa 1910 that once belonged to legendary collector and businessman Lansdell K. Christie (est. $250/350,000). The sale will be on exhibition in Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries beginning 12 April, alongside the auction of Magnificent Jewels.

Another highlight of the Fabergé on offer in the April auction will be A Fabergé Silver and Wood Presentation Lamp, Workmaster Karl Gustav Hjalmar Armfelt, St. Petersburg, circa 1900-1906 (est. $100/150,000). The magnificent lamp, with its fine neoclassical fittings, was presented to Baron Emmanuel Nolde (1854-1909) by members of his staff – Nolde was a distinguished jurist and statesman, and one of Emperor Nicholas II’s key advisors. A Russian Diamond-Set Varicolor Gold, Platinum, and Translucent Enamel Presentation Cigarette Case, Carl Blank, St. Petersburg, circa 1900 also carries important provenance, having been presented to the Don Cossack General Nikolai Klunnikov (1858-1917) by grateful Ukrainian landowners of the Taganrog District, of which he was Administrator (est. $110/130,000).

This year marks the 200th Anniversary of the decisive Battle of Borodino, which marked the beginning of the end for Napoleon’s forces in Russia. The celebrations in 1912 served as the inspiration for A Russian Gilded Silver and Shaded Enamel Pictorial Table Cigar Box, Moscow, circa 1912 (est. $150/250,000). The cigar box depicts the French commander and his troops watching the burning of the Moscow Kremlin. The sale will offer additional items in porcelain, ivory, silver, and gold that were inspired by the victories two centuries ago, and the patriotic fervor they unleashed.

Sotheby’s to auction Soutine’s major works, May 2

Two of the most famous works by Russian-born impressionist artist Chaim Soutine are up for sale at Sotheby’s and are expected to make around $13 million.
The auction house will sell the paintings from the collection of Theodore J. Forstmann, a legendary American financier and philanthropist within the Impressionist and Modern Art Sale scheduled for May 2.

Fragment of Chaim Soutine's "Le Chasseur de chez Maxim's" painting

"Le Chasseur De Chez Maxim's" depicting an anonymous man dressed in a bright red suit and cap is expected to sell for $6.7 million and is considered the artist’s most striking painting. The second work, Soutine’s "Le Chasseur" portraying a young boy in a black suit is expected to fetch between $4 million and $6 million.
Both were painted in Paris in the 1920s, the most productive period in the creative career of the Jewish artist.
Sotheby’s upcoming sale will see another headliner – Pablo Picasso’s "Femme Assise Dans Un Fauteuil," a portrait of his lover and muse. The painting is expected to sell for $20 million – $30 million.
